When George Floyd was murdered Memorial Day weekend 2020, Bob Dickinson had had enough. Between the Covid-19 pandemic, a divisive presidential election, and now the murder of a Black man by a policeman, he knew he had to step away for a while. He found solace by sitting quietly every Friday afternoon… on the oft-uninhabited back porch of a micro-brewery in his hometown. There he decided he would simply ask God to bring reason to an unreasonable world. He decided to listen. And let God speak. God had to have a plan, he reasoned. Initially, he began the Jeremiah James blog sharing “thoughts for everyday living”about family, giving, politics, religion, social and spiritual awareness, sports and entertainment. Eventually, he realized he had more to say and that there was a book in him – somewhere. Thus, the genesis for Me, Jesus, a Beer and a Cigar in which Dickinson tells stories (some true, some fiction) to emphasize that sometimes we simply need to step back and look at something a bit differently than we normally do – than to how we’ve become accustomed. Look for the abnormal solution. And don’t hesitate to get a bit uncomfortable in attacking change. Be intentional. We’ve all sat on the sidelines far too long. God doesn’t want us on the sidelines.
